Driver licences as a pathway to opportunity

Access to a driver licence can be a game changer, especially in regional communities like ours, where transport options can be limited. Having a licence opens doors to employment, training and greater independence.

One of the most practical employment enablers

Supporting this kaupapa continues to be a priority for SWIFT, and in 2026 it sits within a broader, intentional focus for our organisation. This year has been a meaningful one for SWIFT, including at Board level, as we create space to connect more deeply with the people, places, and initiatives driving change across our district.

In March, our Board held its meeting at Transform Aotearoa in Putāruru, the organisation that leads the driver licensing programme across all South Waikato high schools and Te Kura Kaupapa Māori. The visit was an opportunity to strengthen relationships through whakawhanaungatanga, deepen our understanding of the programme’s impact, and spend time learning directly from the people delivering this mahi on the ground.

The incredible team at Transform Aotearoa continues to guide rangatahi across South Waikato to progress through their learner, restricted and full licences, with strong engagement and positive feedback from participants, schools and whānau.

As part of the visit, the Board also went on a short hikoi to check out Transform Aotearoa’s new driving simulator, which is helping rangatahi build confidence and practical skills in a supportive environment.

Through this programme, students across the district are supported to progress through their learner, restricted, and full licences – at no cost. In Term 1, 2026 alone, more than 100 driver lessons were delivered, and over 40 licences were gained, reflecting both strong engagement and the real demand for accessible pathways to licensing.

Over time, it’s become clear that this kaupapa is about far more than just learning to drive. It’s about confidence, pride, and enabling young people to take meaningful steps toward employment and wider opportunities.

We’re incredibly proud to support this important milestone for rangatahi and the pathways it opens for their futures. Moments of connection like these – spending time together, learning alongside one another, and being close to the impact of our collective mahi – are what make this work so special.

Ngā mihi nui to the team at Transform Aotearoa for hosting us, and for the ongoing commitment you show to our young people and communities.
