When Ricco Hikuroa walked into DM Automotive and offered to work for free, he didn’t realise he was kickstarting his dream career. Now, with the help of a SWIFT Scholarship, this Tokoroa local is well on his way to becoming a qualified mechanic—and maybe even opening his own workshop one day.
Ricco, who graduated from Tokoroa High School in 2024, found his passion for automotive engineering through his whānau. His dad’s lowrider Chevy and his uncle’s drag racing Holdens sparked a love for engines early on. After a taster course in school and hands-on experience at DM Automotive, Ricco knew he was on the right path.
Now studying towards a New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3) at the Toi Ohomai Tokoroa campus, Ricco is one of 16 students from South Waikato and Rotorua in the programme. His $5,000 SWIFT Scholarship is helping cover his course fees and bringing his dream within reach.
“I love it,” Ricco says. “This course is helping me build the skills I need to start an apprenticeship and eventually work.”
His journey is proof that with the right support, big goals are possible—whether you’re fresh out of school, upskilling while in work, or making a career change later in life.
We’re proud to back people like Ricco through our SWIFT Scholarship Scheme, which supports South Waikato residents of all ages to pursue tertiary education and training. It’s all part of our mission to break down barriers, unlock potential, and grow opportunities across the district.
If you’re thinking about studying or training—check out the scholarship info on our website and apply. As Ricco says, “Use all your resources, sell yourself, and get good references. It’s a big help.”
